Think NPR Music Tiny Desk, with a not-so-tiny 16-piece big band reinterpreting tracks from MF DOOM + Madlib s Madvillany and Madvillainy 2. Abstract Orchestra, led by saxophonist Rob Mitchell, is inspired by The Roots with Jay-Z as well as the 40-piece orchestral arrangements by Miguel-Atwood Ferguson of J-Dilla, and the group debuted in 2017 with Dilla, which serves as the template for this record: deconstruction and re-imagining of songs like ALL CAPS, Accordion, Raid, and Fancy Clown. Madvillain projects feature heavy nods to jazz, and Abstract Orchestra s takes highlight the very interesting reciprocal territory there has always been between jazz and hip-hop.
