Live recording from Dexter Gordon s first ever appearance in Japan. Tokyo 1975 captures the legendary saxophonist at the height of his powers. He s accompanied by bassist Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen, pianist Kenny Drew, and Espen Rud on drums. The set kicks off with the Gordon original Fried Bananas, one that s seen extensive play by Gordon over the years. Orsted Pedersen turns in a powerful and precise performance, driving the rhythm forward. Gordon plays expertly off of this before dropping out and giving Drew some space to let loose. Standards Days of Wine and Roses and Misty fill in the midsection of the set. Te real treat here is Billy Eckstine s Jelly, Jelly Jelly. Gordon sings the head before diving into the blues on his tenor. Plenty of gusto and grace to be had as you can hear the audience really get into it. Tokyo 1975 is a welcome addition to Gordon s discography. Four tracks in all. Released by Elemental Music on 180 gram vinyl housed in a gatefold sleeve.
